So it would seem that the Spaghetti Western is the inspiration behind the latest trend in women’s outerwear and with the fashion weeks well and truly underway it will be interesting to see how may of fashions gloriatti will be sporting the poncho.
Of course the true reason for this phenomena (and lets face it this IS the pink coat of this Autumn/Winter – remember last AW was like a Mr Blobby convention) is that the rather clever designer Christopher Bailey over at Burberry sent Cara, Suki and Jourdan down the runway with monogrammed ponchos draped over their shoulders. Of course officially a poncho is a large square of material with a hole cut in for your head, but the newer blanket-poncho is so much easier to get on without ruining your do…………. and the fashion pack agreed post Burberry they all ran home and dragged those old blankets out of the dog basket and a trend was born.
Burberry are of course the innovator here with their reversible blanket poncho. Made in Scotland it comes in a cashmere/lambs wool mix and is beautifully finished with blanket stitch – retails at £895.
Jigsaw has produced one of the best with a large colour block effect in either a red base with large panels of tonal beige, grey and greige or a green mix version too. Wool mix with delicate fringe, perfect to belt over jeans or just snuggle in – retail £129.
River Island has produced a good “grab the trend” poncho ( a cape by any other name) beige batik print with a faux fur trim. its just £35 – wear this season and back to that dog basket ?
And for the guys………………ok forget my Spaghetti Western jibe earlier ( actually don’t) this cashmere/wool blend poncho by Alexandre Plokhov stocked at Selfridges is perhaps the most luxurious of all. Fabulously oversized with a drawstring funnel neck and kangaroo pocket it’s festival garb, travel blanket and winter warmer all in one – £975.
Sadly ASOS’ smiley “rave” poncho seems to be sold out – £5 as we full throttle through festivals………….nuff said.
So embrace your inner Clint Eastwood ……………..get Ponch Drunk.
